-(으)ㄴ/는 척하다

to pretend to …

Add -(으)ㄴ/는 척하다 to a verb or adjective to say someone acts as if something were true when it isn't: 자는 척하다 "to pretend to be asleep". Use -는 for something going on now (자는 척, 모르는 척), and -(으)ㄴ for something already done or after an adjective (못 들은 척, 바쁜 척). -(으)ㄴ/는 체하다 means the same but sounds a little more bookish.

  • 친구가 불렀지만 못 들은 척했어요.

My friend called me, but I pretended I hadn't heard.

  • 모르는 문제였는데 아는 척했어요.

I didn't know the answer, but I acted like I did.

  • 동생은 숙제를 다 한 척하고 게임을 했어요.

My little brother pretended he'd finished his homework and played games.
